Cooch Behar, Lakshmi Narayan (SE 1509-1549, 1587-1627 AD), Silver Rupee, 10.31 gms, SE 1509, Obv. 'sri sri / siva charana / kamala madhu / karasya' all within ornametnal border of 14 cusped arcs, Rev. 'sri srima / n lakshmi naraya / nasya sake / 1509' all withing within similar border of 12 cusped arcs, RB #18, Bose B-3.2, extremely fine, exceedingly rare. Ex-Nicholas Rhodes’s Collection. Note: Lakshmi Narayan, the son of Nara Narayan, was an ineffectual ruler. In 1596 AD, he declared himself a vassal of the Mughal Empire, a decision that caused considerable unrest and popular disgust among his subjects. This volatile situation ultimately led him to the Mughal governor in Dacca, where he was subsequently detained for a period of four years. Numismatically, his coinage largely mirrors that of his father, with the notable exception of a significantly higher production volume of Half-Tankas. The coin in question represents one of only four known specimens featuring this specific decorative border type; notably, each of the four extant coins possesses a unique number of arches in its respective border. This particular choice specimen is considered exceedingly rare and is absent from the vast majority of North Eastern coin collections.

Jaintiapur, Jaya Narayan (SE 1630-1653, 1708-1731 AD), Silver Rupee, 9.49 gms, SE 1630 (1708AD), Obv. Sri Sri Si/va Charana Ka/mala Madhu Ka/rasya, Six-pointed star, Rev. Sri Sri Ja/yantipura Pu/randarasya Sa/ke 1630, KM #160, extremely fine, extremely rare. Note: Jaya Narayan succeeded his father, Ram Simha I, who died as a captive of the Ahoms. His father had been at war with the Ahom kingdom after kidnapping the Raja of Kachhar. Consequently, the Ahom King had raided Jaintiapur in 1707 AD, just before Jaya Narayan's rule began. Hence, Jaya Narayan's succession likely marked a period of managing these strained inter-kingdom relations. Jaya Narayan’s reign, and the broader history of Jaintiapur, were marked by regional power struggles. Like other Jaintia kings of the period, Jaya Narayan ruled from a winter capital at Jaintiapur (now in Bangladesh) in the plains and a summer capital at Nartiang in the Jaintia Hills. Jaya Narayan was succeeded by Bargosain II.

The Jaintia Kingdom came into contact with the British East India Company during Jatra Narayan's reign. The British were interested in the region's lime quarries, the primary source of supply for the Bengal delta region. However, interactions were not smooth, and the British began isolating the Jaintias through a system of forts and regulations.
