Assam, Mlechchha Dynasty, Harjaravarman (815-832 AD), Bell Metal Unit, 3.15 gms, ‘Ha’ initials, uniface, extremely fine, very rare. Harjaravarman was a powerful and influential ruler who governed from his capital at Harruppesvara (modern-day Tezpur). He significantly consolidated the borders and administration of his kingdom, a legacy sealed by the issuance of the notable Tezpur rock edict. His reign marked a pivotal shift in the dynasty's political status and independence, as he was the first monarch to assume grand imperial titles such as Maharaja-Dhiraja, Parameswara, and Parama Bhattaraka. To further legitimize his rule within the mainstream Indian political and social framework, Harjaravarman was also the first ruler in his lineage to have his accession ceremony conducted with full Vedic rites. Beyond administration and statecraft, he was a prolific builder and patron of public works: • He commissioned the construction of a temple dedicated to Hetuka Sulin (a form of Shiva) at Harruppesvara. • He oversaw the excavation of a large and significant tank known as the Harjjara Pukuri or Hazarapukhuri in Tezpur, which remains in existence today.

Assam, Mlechchha Dynasty, Tyagasimha (890-900 AD), Heavy Bell Metal Unit, 19.30 gms, ‘Ta’, in Brahmi, letter attributed to Tyagasimha, extremely fine, very rare. Note: Tyagasimha was the last known ruler of the Mlechchha dynasty, which ruled the ancient kingdom of Kamarupa (present-day Assam) from approximately 650 to 900 AD. After Tyagasimha’s death without an heir, the Mlechchha dynasty came to an end. The local people then chose Brahmapala, leading to the establishment of the subsequent Pala dynasty of Kamarupa after 900 AD. "Mlechchha" was a generic term used in ancient Indian texts to denote foreigners, "barbarians" or people of non-Vedic origins, much like the Greek "barbaros". This suggests the rulers were likely indigenous tribal chiefs (possibly of Bodo-Kachari or Mech origin) who were considered outsiders to mainstream Indo-Aryan society before their integration into the political landscape.

The legends on the coins typically invoked Hindu deities, such as Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Gauri (Parvati).
