Tripura, Rajadhara Manikya II (SE 1707-1728, 1785-1806 AD). Gold Mohur, SE 1707, Obv. Lion to left date in saka era below pellet in annulet borders around, Rev. siva durga pa/de sri sri yuta/rajadhara ma/nikya deva within a square & decorative borders around, Graded by PCGS as AU53, exceedingly rare & Unique. Note : This mohur is exceptionally rare, being both unique and previously unpublished. It is of particular note as a similar rupee is catalogued in R&B #259. The coin is being offered at an Indian auction for the very first time, having previously been part of Triton Sale XXII in the USA. Rajadhara Manikya II ruled the Kingdom of Tripura from 1785 until his death in 1806. He formally ascended the throne after a transitional period of regency managed by his mother, Queen Jahnavi Rani Mahadevayu, which had commenced on July 11, 1785. His reign occurred during a pivotal era when the sovereign Kingdom of Tripura had already transitioned into a princely state under British influence, having entered a subsidiary alliance in 1761. Consequently, the scope of his executive authority was that of a ruler within a princely state operating under the overarching British paramountcy, rather than that of a fully independent monarch. It is important for historical accuracy to distinguish this ruler from his namesake predecessor: Rajdhara Manikya I, who reigned significantly earlier, from approximately 1586 to 1600 CE, and notably issued coins with his queen, Satyavati Mahadevi. The two monarchs presided over the state of Tripura in distinctly different historical contexts.

Bajranggarh State, Jai Singh Khichi (AH 1212-1234, 1797-1818 AD), Gold Nazarana Mohur, 10.78 gms, Jainagar Mint, RY 17, Obv. Sri Raghav Paratap Pavan Putra Bal Payake, within dotted border, Rev. yeh sike par chaap maharaj jai singh ki 17 jainagar" meaning the stamp of Jai Singh on this coin, 17 Jainagar, within dotted border, centrally strucked, superb quality extremely fine, exceedingly rare. Note: The gold coins of Bajranggarh are exceedingly rare, known to cataloguers by only four recorded examples. These include an octagonal piece sold at a 2007 international auction, a round piece in the National Numismatic Collection of the USA, an ex-mount coin offered at an Indian auction & another similar specimen with RY 18 sold in Oswal auction for 25Lakh Rupees earlier this year. Struck for ceremonial purposes rather than widespread circulation, their scarcity is attributed to this limited production. During the reign of Jai Singh, Bajranggarh was elevated to his primary residence after his ancestral home, Raghogarh, was threatened by the Sindhia. A ruler of distinct vision, Jai Singh issued coins of remarkable design. These bore inscriptions exclusively in Nagari script and professed allegiance to no one except the Lord Hanuman. The issuance of these unique coins ceased in 1816, when the Sindhia's general, Jean-Baptiste Filose, sacked Bajranggarh, forcing Jai Singh to spend his final years as a fugitive.

Standing figure of Shiva, nimbate, in tribhanga pose making mudra by his right hand, holding trident with banners attached in left, wearing dhoti from waist below and an uttariya on shoulder, In background a lioness or a tiger walking left, looking to him with head turned back, brahmi legends on left upper field ‘MeGhaVaNa’, Rev. Brahmi legend Jaya below the lotus in her hand, TOTGE #18.3.2, very fine, less than 10 coins known, extremely rare. Note: The dies were carved by expert mint masters, most probably on an important occasion to commemorate an event. According to the Rajatarangini, the well-known historical chronicle of Kashmir written by Kalhana in the 12th century AD, Sri Meghavahana was the grandson of Yudhishthira, the son of Bhupaditya, and a ruler of Kashmir. He belonged to a family of Gonaddha. Some scholars believe that Meghavahana was a predecessor of Pravarasena, and some consider the other way around. The Rajatarangini mentions that Meghavahana was followed by Shreshthasena, who was succeeded by Hiranya. When Hiranya died, a usurper named Matrigupta assumed the throne of Kashmir with the help of Vikramaditya of Ujjaini. Pravarasena, the nephew of Hiranya, marched to Kashmir and defeated Matrigupta. Later on, Pravarasena became a great king who founded a city. The history of this period is not very clear in the chronicle, but this coin remains the sole testimony to the historical existence of a king named Meghavahana.

Note: Towards the end of Akbar's reign, his trusted general, Raja Man Singh of Amber, was appointed the governor of Bengal to quell the rebellion of 'Isa Khan, a powerful Bengali Muslim landholder who had been challenging Mughal authority in East Bengal for some time. In the course of his campaign, Man Singh captured Dhaka in 1602 and established it as his base. He resided in Dhaka until early 1605, when, upon learning of Akbar's final illness, he returned to Agra. Akbar passed away on October 27, 1605, corresponding to 14 Jumada 2, AH 1014. This coin is dated AH 1015, which commenced nearly seven months later, therefore it should be regarded as a posthumous issue struck in Akbar's name.

Aurangzeb  (AH 1068-1118 / 1658-1707 AD), Silver Rupee, Qila Adoni Mint, 1098AH/30, Very Fine+, Exceedingly rare coin, Only three specimens known till date with one in Nagpur Museum and two in private collections. We are offering one of those two coins in our upcoming auction.

Aurangzeb was the first Mughal ruler to extend the Mughal territory into southern India. He spent the entire second half of his reign planning  and plotting against the Deccan rulers. He personally led the attack on Bijapur sultanate with an army of over one lakh. Mughals finally managed to capture Bijapur in 1686 AD. When Aurangzeb captured Bijapur capital in 12th September 1686, the fort of Adoni was controlled by Siddi Mausd  a powerful  governor of the Adil Shahi Sultanate and once a regent of Sultan Sikandar Adil Shah. After stepping down as regent of Bijapur in 1683 due to internal  political instability, he retired to Adoni and ruled it with a high degree of autonomy.
Aurangzeb's primary objective was the complete annexation of the Bijapur Sultanate to the Mughal Empire and after capturing the Bijapur capital Aurangzeb set sight on various forts and territories under Bijapur rule, including Adoni. Aurangzeb despatched a powerful army to attack the fort of Adoni. An army led by Maharaja Anup Singh of Bikaner and Firoz Jung after a year long battle were finally able to subdue Siddi Masud who surrendered and later joined the Mughal forces. After the capture of the fort of Adoni coins were struck to commemorate the event and the fort and the surrounding area was renamed Imtiazgadh. Coins with this mint name were issued only for a year with all subsequent coins being struck with the mint name as Imtiazgadh making these coins very rare. The coins with the epithet Dar Ul Zafar – Advani are even more rare.

Cooch Behar, Lakshmi Narayan (SE 1509-1549, 1587-1627 AD), Silver Rupee, 10.31 gms, SE 1509, Obv. 'sri sri / siva charana / kamala madhu / karasya' all within ornametnal border of 14 cusped arcs, Rev. 'sri srima / n lakshmi naraya / nasya sake / 1509' all withing within similar border of 12 cusped arcs, RB #18, Bose B-3.2, extremely fine, exceedingly rare. Ex-Nicholas Rhodes’s Collection. Note: Lakshmi Narayan, the son of Nara Narayan, was an ineffectual ruler. In 1596 AD, he declared himself a vassal of the Mughal Empire, a decision that caused considerable unrest and popular disgust among his subjects. This volatile situation ultimately led him to the Mughal governor in Dacca, where he was subsequently detained for a period of four years. Numismatically, his coinage largely mirrors that of his father, with the notable exception of a significantly higher production volume of Half-Tankas. The coin in question represents one of only four known specimens featuring this specific decorative border type; notably, each of the four extant coins possesses a unique number of arches in its respective border. This particular choice specimen is considered exceedingly rare and is absent from the vast majority of North Eastern coin collections.
