Bengal Sultanate, Nasir al Din Mahmud Bughra Shah (AH 687-688, 1287-1288 AD), Silver Fractional Tanka, 1.88 gms, Lakhnauti Mint, The main identifying characteristic of this coin is the hollow ornamental bead above the ain of azam which is not seen on the issues other ruler’s in Delhi or Bengal Sultanate. The specimen offered here is struck from the tanka dies, Unpublished, Unlisted in G&G, Unique, very fine+, extremely rare. Note: Nasir al-Din Mahmud Bughra Shah , a scion of the imperial Turk dynasty of Delhi Sultanate & Son of Ghiyath al-Din Balban, was installed as the governor of the esteemed province of Bengal. He successfully wrested dominion from his namesake predecessor, subsequently declaring the sovereign independence of the Bengal Sultanate from the suzerainty of Dehli. His administration minted a singular type of tanka listed in G&G B86 , a testament to the fiscal consistency of his reign. These valuable tankas were predominantly struck from the substantial land-tax revenue collected from the opulent region of Bang. Offered specimen is an extremely rare fractional Tanka of the King whose Full tankas seldomly appear in public sales.

Note: Ghiyath al-Din Bahadur Shah reigned as the independent Sultan of Bengal from AH 720-724, 1320-1324 AD. His independent rule ended when his brother and rival claimant, Nasir al-Din Ibrahim, sought assistance from the Delhi Sultan Ghiyath al-Din Tughlaq to depose Bahadur Shah. As a vassal of Muhammad bin Tughlaq, Bahadur Shah minted coins in both their names from Bengal. The specimen being presented is an excellent example of this joint coinage of the Delhi and Bengal Sultanates. These specific joint issues are known to have been minted only during the year 728 AH, which is notably the same year that Bahadur Shah rebelled and reasserted his full independence. This particular coin was issued from the mint of Hadrat Sunargaon.

Jalal al-Dunya wa al-Din Abu al-Muzaffar Muhammad Shah al-Sultan, Rev. a lion to right with his paw raised, short legend above "bin Ganesha ibtad", G&G # B342, fine+, very rare. Note: Jalal-ud-din's use of the lion motif was likely a deliberate political strategy, leveraging the animal as a symbol of sovereignty to project his might and dominance over rivals. The coinage from his second reign initially maintained the established style until the year AH 824, when the notable "lion tankas" were introduced. This series is often considered the most remarkable in Bengal Sultanate’s numismatic history. Although various theories exist regarding the adoption of the lion, primarily connecting it to traditional ideas of kingship and authority, the motif's influence continued, appearing on the currency of two successive Bengal Sultans and the rulers of Tripura.

Note: In the realm of Bengal coinage, coins bearing religious inscriptions are infrequent, particularly those struck during the brief reign of Jalal al-Din Fath Shah. There are, however, uncertainties regarding the legends reported by G&G, specifically concerning the latter part of the reverse inscription. These inscriptions unequivocally refer to the 'Qadam-i Rasool,' or the Prophet's footprint, with the Sultan identifying himself as the Mujawar (close servant or companion) of the associated shrine. The practice of venerating alleged imprints of the Prophet on rocks, though not embraced by Orthodox Islam, led to the establishment of shrines around such marks, reflecting parallels to "footprint worship" found in pre-Islamic traditions like Buddhism and Vaishnavism. Fath Shah's self-depiction as a 'servant' and 'Shaykh' at the shrine highlights his personal piety and alignment with a less orthodox interpretation of Islam. While several mints issued coins with these specific legends, they remain exceptionally rare. Coins originating from the 'Khazana' mint, such as the one described, are notable for their wide flans and decorative borders encircling the inscriptions. This distinctiveness suggests they may have been produced for special events, potentially the inauguration of the shrine in 1485.

Al sultan al mutawwaqil ala allah al-fath al-kamru wa’alkamta bi-inayat allah ala al-dunya wa’al din abu al Muzaffar husain shah al sultan fath kamta, Rev. kalima shahada with mint name & date, multifoil decorative borders, centrally struck, extremely fine with a very high relief, rare. Note: Ala al-din Husain Shah of the Bengal Sultanate achieved a significant victory over the Kamata Kingdom (Kamru and Kamta) in a war that culminated in 1498 AD with the defeat and imprisonment of the last Khen King, Nilambar. All Tanka dated AH 900 were likely struck to commemorate the conquest of Kamta and Kamru. However, the Bengal Sultanate's rule over Kamata and Kamrup was very short-lived, lasting less than a decade. A confederation of local Assamese chieftains (Baro-Bhuyans) rose in revolt, capturing and killing the Governor of Kamta, Shahzada Danyal (Husain Shah's eldest son), and his officers. This effectively ended the Sultanate's direct control over the area within a decade (around 1509 AD). The region then experienced an interregnum until the rise of the Cooch dynasty.
