Chahamanas of Sakambhari, Vigraharaja IV, (1150-1164 AD), Gold Dinar, 4.06 gms, Lord Rama type, Obv. Lord Rama, nimbate, holding arrow in right hand, bow (without string and with little curvature) in his left hand, standing amongst the trees and vines, with the hamsa bird to the left & lotus on right, legends ‘sri rama’ Rev. Nagari legends ‘srimad vigraharaja deva’, Deyell 213a, very fine, extremely rare. This Coin Depicts the earliest known depiction of Lord Rama in any Numismatic Evidence. Vigraharaja IV (c. 1150–1164 CE), also known as Visaladeva, was one of the greatest rulers of the Chahamana (Chauhan) dynasty of Shakambhari and Ajmer. During his reign, the Chauhan kingdom expanded significantly, extending its influence across large parts of present-day Rajasthan, Haryana, and Delhi. He successfully campaigned against neighbouring kingdoms and resisted incursions from the Ghaznavids, establishing the Chahamanas as the dominant power in north-western India.

A patron of learning and culture, Vigraharaja transformed Ajayameru (Ajmer) into a major political and literary centre. He is credited with commissioning important public buildings and supporting Sanskrit scholarship. His reign is regarded as the zenith of Chauhan power before the time of his famous nephew, Prithviraj III (Prithviraj Chauhan).

Numismatically, Vigraharaja is renowned for issuing an exceptionally rare gold dinar depicting Lord Rama holding a bow and arrow, with the legend “Śrī Rāma” on the obverse and “Śrīmad Vigraharāja Deva” on the reverse. These coins are among the most iconic and historically significant Hindu gold issues of medieval India.

Hindu Medieval, Yadavas of Devagiri, Lakshmidevi / Lasuma (1271 AD), Gold Padamtanka, 3.71 gms, Obv. five punch marks consisting of an eight-petaled lotus in the center, Nagari legend "Shri Lasuma" with a sword on top, two punches of "Shri" in Kannada on the sides, a conch-shell (Shankha) below, uniface, Deyell #D413, very fine+, extremely rare. The Regency and Numismatic Legacy of Queen Lakshmidevi Lakshmidevi was the daughter of Kholeshwara, a prominent military commander who served King Singhana of the Yadava dynasty. She married Kanharadeva (also known as Krishna), the ruler of the dynasty. Kanharadeva had a younger brother named Mahadeva. Because Kanharadeva's son, Ramachandra, was still a minor at the time of his father's passing, the king bypassed his son and officially named Mahadeva as his successor. Queen Lakshmidevi, however, strongly opposed this decision. When the throne subsequently passed to Mahadeva, she refused to acknowledge his sovereignty. Following the death of Kanharadeva, she boldly asserted her independence and proclaimed her own political authority by issuing gold Padma Tanka coins in her name. Furthermore, she assumed a regency, most likely to safeguard and support her minor son's legitimate claim to the throne. Numismatic evidence indicates that Lakshmidevi's coins are as exceptionally rare as those of Amanadeva, suggesting that this particular constitutional crisis was short-lived. Notably, the queen's name on the coinage is rendered in vernacular Marathi rather than formal Sanskrit, with "Lasuma" serving as the regional variant of Lakshmi.

Paramaras of Malwa, Mahālakadeva (Mahalugi / Mahlak Deo), (13th Century AD) Silver Dramma, 1.92 gms, Obv. Four-armed Lakshmi seated facing, cross-legged, holding attributes; stylized in the late Paramara fabric, Rev. Devanagari legend in three lines ‘Shri Ma / ha lu gi / Deva’, extremely fine, Of the highest rarity, only the second known specimen, Historically significant and unpublished until very recently, exceedingly rare. Note: Mahālakadeva, recorded in contemporary Persian chronicles as “Mahlak Deo,” was the final sovereign of the Paramara dynasty of Malwa. Historically, his reign was documented exclusively through literary sources, most notably Amir Khusrau’s Tarikh-i ‘Alai and the Jain hagiography Nabhi-nandana-jinoddhara-prabandha (1336 AD). These textual traditions chronicle the twilight phase of Paramara resistance against the imperial expansion of the Delhi Sultanate under Sultan Alauddin Khalji. The Sultanate Invasion and Fall of Malwa In 1305 CE, Alauddin Khalji dispatched a formidable imperial army to subjugate the Malwa region. Mahālakadeva, seconded by his powerful prime minister (pradhan) Gogadeva (Goga), mobilized a massive force comprising cavalry and infantry to counter the invasion. Amir Khusrau records that the Paramara forces suffered a catastrophic defeat, resulting in heavy casualties and the death of Gogadeva on the battlefield. Following this rout, Mahālakadeva retreated to the strategic hill-fortress of Mandu to make a final stand. The stronghold was ultimately breached by the Sultanate forces under the command of Ayn al-Mulk Multani. Mahālakadeva was slain on 24 November 1305 while attempting to escape, effectively terminating Paramara sovereignty in Malwa and leading to its annexation.

Tomars of Gwalior, Maan Singh Tomar (1486-1516 AD), SIlver Tanka, 3.47 gms, AH 967(crude), Obv. Nagari legends within square ‘Man Singh’ with persian legends around, Rev. persian legends copying lodhi’s coinage & date, very fine+, exceedingly rare. Note: Raja Man Singh Tomar (reigned 1486–1516 CE) was the most illustrious monarch of the Tomar Rajput dynasty of Gwalior, whose three-decade rule inaugurated the "Golden Age" of the principality. Through astute governance, he transformed Gwalior into both an unyielding military bastion and the cultural and musical epicentre of Northern India. A significant portion of Man Singh’s sovereignty was defined by his relentless defense against the expansionist ambitions of the Delhi Sultanate. He successfully thwarted multiple incursions by Sultan Bahlul Lodi and his successor, Sikandar Lodi, who sought control over the strategically vital Gwalior Fort. Whenever military confrontation proved unviable, the Raja deployed calculated diplomacy and sent monetary tributes to preserve Gwalior’s autonomy. However, this protracted geopolitical tension culminated in 1516 CE when Ibrahim Lodi, Sikandar's successor, launched a massive siege against the fortress. Man Singh tragically passed away during the course of this prolonged military conflict, after which his son and successor, Vikramaditya, ultimately capitulated the fort a year later. Beyond his martial prowess, Man Singh was a profound musicologist and a revolutionary patron of the arts. He is widely credited with the codification and popularisation of Dhrupad, one of the oldest surviving genres of Hindustani classical music, adapting its rigorous structure to suit the evolving aesthetics of his era. To institutionalise this cultural renaissance, he established a prestigious academy of classical music within his court and convened monumental musicological conferences. Under his royal aegis, the Gwalior court nurtured legendary maestros such as Swami Haridas and Baiju Bawra, alongside the musical progenitors of Tansen, who imbibed Gwalior's rich cultural heritage before eventually gracing the imperial court of Emperor Akbar.

Devanagari legend ‘Sri Krishna Shri Madhuka /ra Sah’, uncleaned, about very fine, extremely rare. Note: Madhukar Shah was a prominent ruler of the Gond kingdom of Garha-Katanga (referred to as Gadha-Mandla in contemporary British and Marathi archival sources) in central India. His reign spanned approximately from 1576 to 1592 CE. The geopolitical landscape of the region had shifted dramatically in 1564 CE when the Gond kingdom succumbed to the expansionist campaigns of the Mughal Emperor Akbar, following the historic battle at Chauragarh where the legendary Rani Durgavati immolated herself. In the aftermath, Akbar installed Chandra Shah as a vassal monarch of Garha-Mandla. However, fraternal strife soon destabilized the vassal state; Madhukar Shah assassinated his brother, Chandra Shah, to usurp the throne—a succession confirmed by the genealogical records of the historic Ramnagar inscription. This act of fratricide (patrihanta) ignited severe internal political and religious resistance. The royal priest (Rajpurohit), Damodar Thakur, vehemently refused to legitimize the usurpation or perform the coronation ceremonies for a regicide. In response, Madhukar Shah bypassed the traditional ecclesiastical authority, appointing Madhav Pathak as the new high priest to officially solemnize his investiture and consecrate his sovereignty. Madhukar Shah’s ascension marked a definitive turning point for the fractured realm, initiating a period of political consolidation and socioeconomic revival. Numismatic evidence from his reign features dates closely aligning with the twilight of Akbar's rule, strongly suggesting that Madhukar Shah capitalized on Mughal distractions to assert geopolitical independence by minting coinage in his own name.
