The fort of Bandhavgarh which was traditionally ruled by the Baghela rulers was attacked by Akbar's forces in 1597 when a young Vikramaditya Deo Baghela ascended the throne. Vikramditya was forced to vacate the fort and thus Akbar made Rewa the capital.
